About the guide
Screen reader knowledge for the whole product team
Screen Reader Guide was created by accessibility specialist Amin Amini to help product teams understand screen readers and use them confidently throughout product development.
Why I created it
In my work with product teams, I repeatedly saw designers, developers, testers, and product owners struggle to use screen readers in accessibility testing. Available guidance was often platform-specific, centred on lists of commands, or disconnected from the decisions teams make while designing and building products.
I created Screen Reader Guide to make the subject easier to understand and apply. It connects foundational knowledge with practical testing across web, mobile, desktop, TV, streaming devices, wearables, kiosks, and embedded systems.
How the content is developed
Start with reliable sources
Guides draw primarily on official platform and screen reader documentation, with sources linked where they are most useful.
Test in context
Commands and behaviour are checked on the relevant devices and software combinations where possible, with version context kept visible.
Separate evidence from assumptions
Documented behaviour, practical observations, and user research are treated as different kinds of evidence.
Invite correction
Screen readers and platforms change. Clear corrections and additional evidence are welcome at [email protected].
Team testing is not user research
Screen reader testing by product teams can reveal barriers in structure, navigation, interaction, and feedback. It cannot show whether an experience is efficient, intuitive, or appropriate for the people who rely on screen readers every day. Internal testing should complement, not replace, research and testing with experienced screen reader users.
